What is calorie counting?
Calories do count, but not everyone has to count them!
What is calorie counting?
Calorie counting is a method of accounting for the number of calories (or kilojoules) in each meal and drink you consume each day.
This can be done using a product log, an application, or simply by writing the information to a spreadsheet. Alternately, calorie-based meal plans can be prepared in advance and then must be followed precisely.
Do calories count?
There are two main opinions on this:
• Calories and only calories matter and need to be counted.
Calories don't matter - it's the macronutrients (i.e. carbohydrates, protein, fat) that mean everything.
As for energy consumption and production, calories mean everything. As for health and nutrition, macronutrients matter.
Think about it: if you decide to stick to a diet of 1800 calories a day - will you consume all your 1800 calories from diet drinks? Or live on a 100% fat diet? Probably not. Thus, macronutrients matter to some extent.
So what's the answer? If you are trying to lose weight, then calories do count, and depending on your individual body constitution - the ratio of macronutrients will also affect the success of your weight loss program. That's why some of the population reacts to low-carb diets, while others respond to low-fat diets.
Get the right calories first - THEN experiment with the nutrient ratio.
But I hate counting calories!
You are not alone. Calorie counting is not for everyone, it can make eating that was enjoyable a painful obsessive ritual. It works well for some, but not for others.
However, you need to get an idea of the amount of food that will help you lose weight. Eating until you are full (that is, until you are full) is not always reliable.
It may be worth counting calories for a week or two - then once you figure out which portions of food work for you, you can stop being obsessed.
How do I count calories?
DIY
If you want to do it yourself, you have to determine the number of calories in all the food that you are going to eat or have eaten. They must register daily. You will also need to set a daily calorie intake for weight loss. It can take time, and it's not for everyone.
Subscribe to a diet plan
Many online programs will record your personal statistics and make daily calorie-controlled meal plans for you. It saves time - that's why some people choose this path.
